Acclaimed Portuguese conductor Joana Carneiro makes her Kirklees Concert Season debut, opening the concert with Beethoven’s Coriolanus Overture.
Along the lines of the musical portraits in Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Elgar’s Enigma Variations, James MacMillan’s ‘sonically spectacular’ (LA Times) Scotch Bestiary for organ and orchestra was inspired by personalities he had encountered in his native country.
One of Beethoven’s most enduringly popular works – its imposing Allegretto accompanied the closing scene in the Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech – the Seventh Symphony will send you away uplifted on the whirling currents of its glorious final movement.
